Meet Sponsoring Partner WA State Jewish Historical Society

Updated: Jul 15, 2022

The Washington State Jewish Historical Society aims to:

  • Preserve and present the history of Jewish life in Washington state

  • Foster awareness and appreciation of the experiences, the diverse culture, and the significant contributions of Jews, past and present

  • Build bridges with communities by sharing collective histories and serving as an educational resource

Garfield is featured as Stop 29 on the virtual WSJHS Seattle Historic Sephardic Tour, exemplifying how the Jewish community is woven into Garfield's story and vice-versa.

One video captures the early athletics scene at Garfield: "Coach Leon Brigham successfully unified players from diverse groups to forge the Bulldogs' championship football, basketball and track teams." (Quote from "Family of Strangers" by Molly Cone; images from 1935/1937 yearbooks)

We also learn from early Jewish Bulldog graduates how Garfield helped shape them:

Thanks to Washington State Jewish Historical Society for its partnership as we honor 100 years of Garfield High School and thanks to Lisa Kranseler, Executive Director of the Washington State Jewish Historical Society!
