Meet our Community Partner: Northwest African American Museum

The Northwest African American Museum (NAAM):

  • advances justice and equity, cultivates quality educational programming for all, and centers Black history, art and culture

  • serves as a source of community, connection, understanding, and empowerment, here in the Central District and throughout the entire Northwest

  • offers accessible, impactful experiences and exhibitions that open minds and change lives. More info at www.naamnw.org

From NAAM Education Coordinator and Garfield High School graduate, Jason Turner (pictured): "NAAM has had an awesome long-time partnership with Garfield High School. NAAM's founding Executive Director was Dr. Garver Gayton, a 1956 Garfield High graduate.

"Moreover, NAAM celebrated MLK60, the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr's visit to Seattle, on Nov. 6, 2021 at Garfield." NAAM's ACE Ensemble, directed by Turner, performed at the event as well.

"This year, on Jan. 17, NAAM also celebrated the annual King Day with the community on the Garfield campus." NAAM provided COVID vaccinations, gave away new books by Black authors, and had a donation station for the community to give essential items to people experiencing homelessness and others in need. Thank you to Northwest African American Museum for its partnership as we honor 100 years of Garfield High School!

Also, gratitude to NAAM's Founding Executive Director Dr. Carver Gayton (GHS Class of 1956) and current President & CEO LaNesha DeBardelaben, pictured at a recent NAAM Unity Benefit.
