Meet our Community Partner: The Seattle Public Library Douglass-Truth Branch

The Seattle Public Library’s mission is to bring people, information and ideas together to enrich lives and build community. We rely on our close partnerships with agencies such as the Seattle Public Schools that educate and empower the people of Seattle. We are excited that our historic Douglass-Truth Branch (at 23rd and Yesler) is a community partner with neighboring Garfield High School.

One of the many connections between these Central District institutions is the Soul Pole, the 21-foot sculpture that has stood outside the branch since 1973, representing 400 years of African American history.

Garfield students and alumni were involved with this community-driven project, including Rotary Boys Club Director Wilson Gulley, Sr. (’56). Students who helped carve the Pole included Garfield’s Brenda Davis (pictured), Larry Gordon, and Gaylord Young, as well as Cindy Jones and Gregory Jackson.

The Library is working with another, Centennial Celebration-partner, the Black Heritage Society of Washington State, to gather Soul Pole stories.
